Kodachrome (The Instagram ReMix)

This post modernizes the lyrics for Simon and Garfunkel’s Kodachrome – giving it a social media spin, in the era of Instagram.

Somewhere between my first cup of coffee and my morning commute, I scanned my social channels.

It’s now an embedded ritual that borders on the pathological for many of us. But I digress.

After sorting through foibles on Facebook and a torrent of tidbits on Twitter, I came across an interesting idea about Instagram as a creative outlet.

It made a lot of sense.

After all, we live in a visual world. We love to share. We are a people of the instant. And we are all connected through the air, and by lines of software code.

I’ll spare you the details of the next eleven hours at work… but on my way home, Kodachrome came up in my iPod rotation.

For a while, I blithely hummed along with the rest of the traffic zombies, thinking little of the significance of this song to the start of my day. As I raced home to beat the approaching thunderstorm, inspiration struck.

Call it Kismet, or simple desperation for a fresh post idea, but I bridged my Instagram instant to my Kodak moment.

I thought: I should rewrite the Simon and Garfunkel classic.
What the heck, it needed an update anyway.

Please allow me to present Kodachrome (The Instagram Mix).
InstaChrome – for short.

When I think back
On all the crap I’ve seen on Twitter
It’s a wonder
I can tweet at all
And though my lack of social graces
Hasn’t hurt me none
I can post great pictures to my wall.

Instachrome
Capture that fleeting interest
Growing our boards on Pinterest
Sharing a scene for all the world to see, oh yeah!
I got an iPhone camera

I love to post my photographs
So Mama, don’t take my InstaChrome away

If you took all the shots I snapped
With my old camera
Put them all together on one thumb drive
They would stay idly tucked in
Digital isolation
Obscured away from all your prying eyes

Instachrome
Capture that fleeting interest
Growing our boards at Pinterest
Sharing a scene for all the world to see, oh yeah!
I got an iPhone camera
I love to post my photographs
So Mama, don’t take my InstaChrome away

(then a bunch or repeats of the last stanza)

So there you have it. Another beauty of the social web – giving your average bard a platform for creative expression.

We just have to be open to moments of inspiration. We may not be the next Anne Geddes. We probably won’t be the next Jimmy Buffett.

But the visions are before us, and the songs are within us. So we take pictures, write stuff, and shout out our humanity.
